| Kumu Hula Rich Pedrina has his Halau in Honolulu.
He also has Halaus on mainland USA, as well as in Japan and Germany. Dance-studio owner Miron asked him to teach Hula in Berlin. He started visiting Berlin in 2004. Miron travels to Hawai’i twice a year to take his lessons. Over 30 people belong to this Hula-dance group in Berlin now. "I was very surprised by the popularity of Hula in Germany. They (Hula club “No ka ho’omana’o ana ia Berlin”) even had a festival in honor of King David Kalakaua in August of 2006!” "Everyone can take my workshop in Germany, it's open to non-halau members. Some dancers come from Holland, Spain, Italy and Austria. I teach them Kahiko and Oli as well. Dancers in Europe are very eager with their Hula studies. Their knowledge of Hawai’i isn’t very profound yet, but they are trying to acquire information by using the Internet. They are doing well." Kumu Rich communicates with them often by chatting online. He checks their performance by watching videos. " It's hard to teach them my Hula-style, because it is only once a year that I see them. However I want them to dance correctly. I always say to my overseas dancers that the style I'm teaching has been handed down from generation to generation. I don't want to teach my Hula to the people who change the style just to make it fancy. In order to teach the style correctly, I go to Germany." |
